Though I have a BFA in painting from the university of Washington,
I consider myself to be self taught.
I love the simplicity of my work. my desire to paint quickly has given
my brushstroke more confidence, and has made my colors more vibrant.
I desire depth and realism and at the same time an effortless energy
brought on by my passion. I love getting lost in my work. I don't overanalyze,
I just react. And when I paint I continually remind myself of my unique position,
to bring these wonderful creatures to life.
My approach is simple. I eliminate all elements that I have no interest
in, and focus only on that which brings me the most joy to paint. And
though physically, my subjects are simple, I bring to them an emotional
depth, and hopefully a power to draw the viewer in.
My approach to painting and the paintings themselves have been
influenced by an even greater passion: My life and work in a
Belarussian orphanage. My desire to know them, to understand their
difficult and complex lives, has shown up in my work. I care more
about conveying inner thoughts rather than action and moments.
I am intrigued by the paradox in their lives. Many have experienced
great horrors, but still maintain a beautiful innocence and joy
that is remarkable to be around. And when I paint them, I paint
with great motivation and passion. I want to capture the brilliance
inside them that can otherwise be so difficult to see.
