Lucy Harvey
Lucy Harvey's work helps fuel the imagination and serves as a metaphor for both the unconscious mind and the collective memory. Her new sculptures are created from collections of memories, dreams and objects that have served another life. Jewelry, pottery shards, glass, entwined beautifully with freshly cut and polished gems create these sculptures. Often drawn from her own history, these objects carry the nostalgia and worn surfaces associated with heirloom treasures and a culture removed. These sculptures are marked by absurd juxtapositions of materials and the merging of the common, or discarded, with new objects and high culture.
In each of these works, the whole is more than and different form, the sum
of its parts. She may be conquering some of the challenges we face in this new century; how do we rebuild what we have broken? How do we take elements from the past and combine them with today? Either precious, or fragmented, how do we re-think and merge all of these things into something beautiful?
